Image formats

"A picture is worth more than a thousand words". This is something most of us have probably heard more than once. But if you don't use the right image or show the wrong parts of a picture, your message can get distorted. One of the most common causes if this is using an image with the wrong format.

Author offers two different types of viewing modes: Desktop and Mobile. The Desktop view makes use of three different image formats:

  1. Most Templates where you can upload an image that is not "full-width" displays images as 440*619px, as such it is taller than it is wide and to best make use of this you should use images taken in a portrait format.
  2. Full-width uses the standard 16:9 aspect ratio and heavily favours images in landscape format.
  3. The "Text with Image"-template includes an option for "Narrow" Size of Text Field. While this option is selected the image area is expanded and displays images as 660*619px, changing the format from portrait almost to a square, but with a slight lean towards landscape format.

While it is not necessary to resize your images to the exact measurements, it is good to keep these points in mind when choosing images for your module.

Mobile viewing offers both horizontal and vertical options and therefore offers more freedom when using images, depending on how you intend that your module should be viewed, but may also require some additional work getting the positions just right.

Please use the "Page view device selector" in Author to switch between desktop and mobile preview and make sure everything looks as you intend before publishing the module.

Note: When an image has been uploaded it will automatically be resized to fit the intended format. For this reason it is not necessary to resize images before they are uploaded, but the images can look squished or stretched if they're the wrong format.
